Have you ever read a book that turned out to be totally different than you expected it to be? I think I am in the midst of one of those books right now.
I am currently reading The Alchemist's Daughter by Katherine McMahon. And let me tell you a little about why I chose to read this book. First, the school I was student teaching at was having a book exchange in the library. You bring in a book, you get to take one home! great deal! So it was a free book. I picked this book up because, honestly, it had a beautiful cover.
I know I know don't judge a book by its cover blah blah blah. Whatever I ALWAYS judge books by the cover because I know that it is some person's JOB to make a cover that represents what this book is and how they want to market it.
Anyways. Reason #2 for choosing this book was it is set in England 1725. I'm a sucker for Brit Lit. My favorite has been Victorian Lit which is about 100 years after this, but I thought I'd give it a whirl. And Finally, Alchemy. I'm a fantasy person. Not a dragons and knights fantasy, but more SciFi, magical things fantasy. So i thought this would be sorta magical and exciting.
....well I'm about 70 (out of 338) pages in and... well so far no magic. All references to Alchemy have been either scientifical (not a word) or treated like a closely guarded secret. HOWEVER, the book may be taking a turn for the romantic. and i don't think in a good way.
don't get me wrong, i'm a girl and I like a good romance. I am not, however, a fan of romance novels. the kind you can buy at the drug store with pictures of shirtless men on the covers. I understand the appeal to some women, just not for me. When I read a sentence about a woman tingling in her nether regions I become a 12 year old and giggle. I admit it.
So what I know so far about The Alchemist's Daughter:
Emilie was raised as a scientific thinker by her father.
She doesn't know much at all about human emotion or social interractions.
Handsome strangers who come calling when daddy is out of town is bad news. But she likes it...
I'll keep reading, but I'm not thrilled yet.

First Blog!
So, I'm fairly new to the world of blogging, but since I just graduated college and am setting out on the journey of finding a job(EEK!) I decided I needed something to do to keep my writing in use. Let's start with a little about me. I am 24 years old, living in Chicago, a recent college graduate with a double major in Theatre Arts and English Education. My hope is to become a high school English and Theatre teacher.
My first question when I had this idea was, "What can I blog about?" What do I do that is of any interest to anyone out there? Well I decided that since reading is one of my favorite past times it would be a good place to start.
So that is the plan here. I read books, I write about the book and tell the internet what I think of the book. Sounds good right? We'll see. I also plan to use this blog for other reviewing I can do such as plays and movies. So Ok here we go!
